Meet Our Mares - the Backbone of our Program

Hillaryswinner

Feb 18, 2006 - May 29, 2023

"Hillary" was the mare that started us on this breeding endeavour. She was by Honor Glide, out of Yanks Song (Seattle Song). She had 15 starts and earned just over $25,000 USD on the racetrack.

Hillary was presented to the RPSI (now Westfalen) where she was awarded Premium Mare, Site Champion, and ended up in the top 10 highest scoring mares for all of North America in 2013.

Her first foal was our very first breeding, and our very first homebred. That was Whatsonemore (aka Tyson) who had 11 starts as a racehorse, and has since moved on to competing in three day eventing with his new owner.

Hillary also took us to the Royal Winter Fair a couple years in a row, and was Reserve Grand Champion in the thoroughbred classes.

Sadly we lost Hillary in 2023, but her presence is still here on the farm - she is greatly missed and reminisced about often. RIP Hillary

You Bean Executive

Mar 2, 2005 - Dec 21, 2023

"Lacey" was the very first OTTB to come to Hammerdown Farm back in 2010. She was always considered Todd's horse, as when we went to go see her at the track, Todd said "I like her" and well, she came home with us that day!

Lacey was by Bold Executive, out of You Gotta Pay Him (Alydeed). She had just 7 starts on the racetrack, and then came to live with us. She was approved in the Main Mare Book 1 with RPSI (now Westfalen), showed at the Royal Winter Fair a few years for us in the thoroughbred line classes, and gave us two absolutely lovely fillies. Her first foal, Malina HDF, was the very first filly to be born at Hammerdown Farm.

Lacey herself was a natural jumper, and showed tremendous scope and willingness in the jump chute. Sadly though, due to some severe arthritis in her spine up by her poll, we had to make the decision to let her body be at peace in 2023. RIP Lacey

Southridge Navan Della

Reg. Belgian born Mar 24, 2006

"Della" is by Southridge Navan Superior (Jay-Lou-Supreme), and out of Southridge Navan Daisie May (Eddie Du Marais). She was our very first draft horse - and she was Todd's very first horse ever.

Della took us to multiple fall fairs, and also the Royal Winter Fair for a couple years, including showing in the cart classes in the main coliseum.

Della also gave us our very first draft filly foal, Hammerdown Danika. Della is now retired from breeding and competition, but still helps us out with raising the foals when needed. Della is an absolutely wonderful mare with the young ones. She has even shown us that she is quite capable of taking on nurse mare duties if ever needed. Truly a gentle giant.

Meet the Team

Why the name "Hammerdown Farm"?

Todd has always been into speed and racing - whether it be racing cars or racing snowmobiles, or even racing lawn mowers! If it had wheels and a motor, he would try and race it. As well, Todd used to drive a transport truck for a living, and works as a big truck mechanic.

Candace is also into speed - just look at her equine events of choice! Three day eventing isn't for the faint of heart, and barrel racing is all about the fastest time winning.

Candace also used to drive a transport truck - in fact, that is how Candace and Todd met. She had taken her 2000 Freightliner in to Todd's workplace to get some work and repairs done.

So, the term "Hammerdown" which is a common term that long haulers use when trying to get somewhere in a hurry, just seemed rather fitting!

Candace Sirianni

Candace started taking English riding lessons at Damastra Farms in Vineland when she was 11 years old.  She got her first horse, a quarter horse named Kellie Miscue, when she was 12. She has been involved with horses ever since. Candace started in the Niagara Pony Club as well as the 4-H Horse Club, and from there went on to compete in three day eventing with her Thoroughbred mare Slowmovin Dream. Later on Candace decided to try some barrel racing - and followed the rodeo circuit for a couple years. From there Candace and her lovely mare went on to pursue some cow sorting, and mainly just having fun! Candace has done a little of everything when it comes to horses - from dressage and showjumping, to PPG games and barrel racing, and from cow sorting to carriage driving! She has always enjoyed teaching horses new things, and finds working with young horses especially rewarding. In 2015 she decided to try breeding, and in 2016 her very first homebred was born.

Todd Haughland

Todd's love and admiration for horses grew while getting to know Candace's mare Slowmovin Dream. However, even as a youngster, Todd always loved watching the draft horse hitches at the fairs and parades, and for some reason was always drawn to them. Once he met Candace and started hanging out at the barn watching her work with her horse and realizing what a bond there is between horse and rider, he decided that maybe being into horses didn't have to be "just a pipe dream". So Todd started to do some research on breeds, and once again found himself drawn to the heavies. At first the plan was to just get a well broke horse that maybe had some draft breeding in it. But, after going to some shows and auctions, both Candace and Todd realized that they aren't the type of people to just dabble in something here and there - so they made the decision together to just jump right in with both feet! They purchased two Belgians and started showing and driving them at the local fairs.
